We were contemplating between hiring a driver, or renting a car. In the end, we picked to rent a car due to the following reasons; (1) More flexibility in terms of timing and itinerary, (2) our hotel was not really that near to all the popular streets in Georgetown. We were worried that Uber/Grab are not that established yet and we couldn't get any rides, and (3) papaTan's friends told him that the drive there is easy. No need to worry too much one lolz. So in the end, we picked to rent a car.
We rented a Proton Preve which was rather spacious and really much bigger than the Proton Sage. We vaguely remembered that the costs was about $55 per day from EuropCar, which summed up to around $165 for our stay in Penang. PapaTan booked the car from this "CarTrawler" site, which was actually linked to from the Penang International Airport site. Just to note, this is a site that compares all the prices of the cars from different companies. They don't actually rent car. AFter 30 minutes or so of queuing up (only one pax in front of me) and then underwent a round of checks on the car, we are ready to go to GeorgeTown!
This hotel was recommended to us by Kee Kian and Gina (our neighbours at Waterway Sundew), with alot of good reviews and photos from there. This loft was located just beside the water, spanning a good view over the sea. The apartment is huge, with 2 bedrooms, a kitchen in its 2 storey high apartment. The price was reasonable, it costed approximately $100 per night. The location was not near Georgetown, but just below this hotel, there are plenty of pubs, eateries, massage and convenience stores within 1 min walk. We highly recommended people whom wants to go Penang to chill only.
After settling down at the hotel, we took a quick bath and proceeded for our dinner at Kimberly Street thereabout. As we arrived slightly after lunch, we were very hungry and most of the eateries that we eyeballed were not opened yet, we settled for a quick lunch at a random kopitiam located at the junction of Carnarvon and Kimberly. The food was so-so, but we love the fried oyster egg. The wanton mee was disappointing.
After the lunch, we wanted to go to the Upside Down museum but it was about to close already. Hence, we went for the Street Art Mural Hunting. We downloaded a map previously, and plotted all the points in google map. You could probably walk around to find all the mural arts, but in our case, we drove since we have rented a car. It took us some efforts to find all the murals, but there were really quite amazing.
We rushed back to Kimberly street to eat the popular duck rice. The duck kwap chap was really really good. It is really highly recommended. Pictures speak a thousand words, so enjoy the photos!
