DAY 1 - HFMD diagnosed.
We took almost 3 hours at the PD clinic before we managed to see the doctor and confirmed that it is HFMD. The fever broke after feeding of nurofen but at the same time we noticed some red spots on Morris Tan. It is very depressing as the doctor check the mouth and we see ulcers.
He is very cranky today as he realize it is very painful to swallow water, latch or to drink from bottle. Rejected milk as he doesn't like chilled milk. We have to coax many times to make him drink some chilled juices. Thank god that he has a bit of appetite for food as we cooked some porridge for his meals.
He tried to stay cheery but its obvious that he refuses to swallow his saliva as it is painful. Pointed out to us that it is painful and whines all the times on discomfort. The nightmare comes when we battled almost 3 hours of non-stop crying before he finally decided to sleep. And yes, that lasted barely an hour as he woke up again crying nonstop from being discomfort.
When we thought that the night will end after he woke up from that hour later but we are all wrong. He woke up every hour thereafter. 2am, 3am, 4am crying uncontrollably and telling you that he is very painful. Tried nursing him but he was all too pain. Had to repeatedly do it a couple of times and encourage him before he latch on and slowly drift back to sleep.
At that moment, i curse and swear at the parent who bought the affected children out to public areas for causing such pain on Morris.
Day 2 - HFMD. More red spots pops up all over Morris Tan's limps, body and face. He clearly able to let us know that the ulcers causing him pain. The morning went pretty well with him drinking up half a packet of chilled soy milk. He managed to take 2.5 hrs of nap which goes to show that he is really tired. He is still rejecting milk but we managed to add milk to ice cream to make him take more liquid. The boy is like our king of the house as he fuss through the day but i am glad, he is still rather cheery despite being in this situation. The nurses suggested us to buy Calamine lotion to apply on him to prevent any scratching which is very useful. |
Adding on, Thanks to Ces mama for suggesting to buy the 菊花,金银花 & 板蓝根 to boil for Morris. We do not know if its useful but minimally he is drinking more liquid. Kind of upset for the family as the boy usually takes about 1 L of Milk but now, barely 2/5 of the liquid intake per day. The night was better in comparison to the night before. He slept before 11pm, woke up once and cried uncontrollably for almost 45 minutes before drifted back to sleep. Next round of waking up around 3/4am but i managed to nurse him back to sleep. Sleep well my boy, only through resting where it will consume up your hours daily and in no time, you will recover! |
This young boy here is still rejecting bottle feeding as his ulcers hurts. We managed to coax him into drinking more porridge water during meals and we can see his appetite increases. The night went off pretty rough as i had high fever during the night with severe body aching till now.
Understand the importance of keeping Morris hydrated which is as per instructed by the Dr. We tried all kinds of methods to coax him into taking more liquid intake. Such as ice cream topped up with fresh milk, pudding as well as chilled drinks. In the mean time, we continue to brew 菊花,金银花 & 板蓝根 for Morris to drink. Im having fever up to 40.2 Degree celsius and is monitoring myself in the event where HFMD spread to me. The fever goes so high where it reminds me of day zero prior Morris Tan's confirmed case of HFMD.
Day 4 - HFMD (Recovery stage) Seems like his ulcers are getting better as he is willing to drink from the milk bottle today when GrandmaKwan made 100 ml to test and see if he wants to drink. And who knows, he actually drinks and finished it while telling grandmaKwan that he wanted more. His usual feed is about 260 ml per feed and so we topped up another 160 ml for him and he FINISHED it! Not trying to exaggerate but it really brings us joy! He is also eating his porridge well today! And he is also drinking water from his straw bottle as well. I guess the ulcers are healing well thus it gives him appetite. Kind of upsetting us to see he dropped so much weight over the past 4 days of poor appetite. |
Day 5 - HFMD (Recovery stage) He adapts back to normal routine where he drinks and eats well. I am guessing that his case might be considered mild so that explains he is recovering quicker instead. On the other hand, i am still monitoring myself to see if i would have been affected by the HFMD. (Hopefully no pls!). I am thinking that the medicine provided by Dr is useful to boost up Morris' immune system as he was prescribed with Methisoprinol Isoprinosine (Antiviral) medicine. We have done 1 round of cleaning for his belonging and will need to wash his items all again once he recovers. After this incident of HFMD, we understand the need to tighten up the hygiene level for Morris and we must be KIASU. Cleaning him as well as things he can touch on is a MUST-MUST. We really do not wish something like that to happen to Morris especially he is of such a young age. Really heartbreaking to see something like that. |
He was describing about how painful the body aching as well as the sores on the limps were. This sorts of let us know more about how Morris felt during the period of HFMD. I guess it is more painful for adults since our realization of pain and threshold is alot lesser. Proper hygiene and constant hand washing is important at ALL TIMES to minimize such painful experience from re-occurrence. JIAYOU Tan family!
